The director claims Ryan wanted Rachel out, saying they had no chemistry whatsoever. It all escalated until an epic screaming match happened, which made things better.
Ryan Gosling improvised the iconic line at the end of the film. When Noah confronts Allie and forces her to realize what she really wants, shouting, "What do you want! What do you want?" - The line was not originally in the movie script.
