A thick yellow smog brought the capital to a standstill for four days and killed thousands peopole. Today London’s air appears to be much cleaner today but it stills dengerously polluted. London was often hidden under noxious fog that were called smog there had been smog before but nothing could be compared to that event.
When it happened people couldn’t be able to see almost anything that’s why police used flames to direct the traffic because driving was really dangerous. The had to force bus drivers to walk ahead of their vehicles and trying to guide them thorugh the smog.
Great Smog
This event affected London in December 1952. during a period of cold weather, combined with windlees conditions and anticyclone.
London
The event that happened in 1952 earned the title of the worst air pollution event in European history".
The great Smog, 1952
London has been affected by fogs but this became much more severe after the onset of the Industrial Revolution.Smog is easily identified by its thick, dirty-yellow and brown characteristics, this is different to the white and creal fog in some country areas.
Guilty
Humans are the only guilty creature of these kind of events and every chance that is happening all around the world these days.
Fog
There's a general hypothesis about what happened those days in London, scientists think that coal emissions had somehow mixed with the fog and led to people being poisoned by nocius clouds.
Smoke
Scientists have figured that people were breathing in the fog equivalent of acid rain. During the great smog 1,000 tonnes of smoke particles were emitted.
Toxic
Many people suffered from breathing problems and about 4,000 people died due to the fog.
A toxic cloud
When some chemicals mix with air and water, they can turn into acid which can cause skin irritations and breathing problems.
A dark layer
Visibility was reduced and people weren't able to see anything, they said "it was like you were blind!".
Darkness
This kind of smog has now became just a thing of the past, thanks to modern developments, such as the use of central heating.
Deadly effects
It left thousands dead people in London and scientist think it could have been many more because of the terrific weather.
Dark days
This situation happened more than 60 years ago but is pretty helpful for scientists and governments, so they can understand in a better way pollution problems.
Sulfuric acid
It was really necessary to wear masks during the great smog because there were many issues about the environment.
Toxic Little Molecules
London was often hidden under noxious fog that was called smog since 1800. People from London didn't freak about the great smog.
Negative environmental impac
Couldn't see anything
A London driver was forced to walk ahead of this vehicle to guide it through the smog.
Warning
This was denser than the accustomed heavy fogs. These weather systems, anticyclones had come every year but they lasted just two or three days, that time in 1952 lasted five days.
Air
There was a thick layer of fog that has covering and it was spreading all over the place. The blacnket of cold air from the continent became stationary all over the city causin the warm, smoke-landen air.
4 days
It lasted four days, from 5 December to 9 December 1952 and after when the weather changed this smog was dispersed really quickly.
Cold weather
A man is making sure everybody notices there is a sign.
